We are obsessed with zombies because when people turn into zombies it's okay to shoot them. People just love shooting other people in the face. Or decapitating them with katanas and chainsaws.

Diego Intriago March 10, 2014 - 3:10 PM

Really IN MY OPINION i think the zombie movement relates more towards two things, the need of human to hunt and the fear towards a prey without fears. What the heck im talking about? Well to be serious and real, we all enjoy either fighting or running for something, an example is physical sports either in team or solo, like soccer, football, mixed martial arts, hockey etc. How this relates? Well we need to liberate our testosterone(both women and men) and as we doesnt have to run and hunt all day yet we enjoy it we become play hunters and huntresses. So zombies, ancient myths of warriors and creatures, develope from the impulse of ferocity and brutality we have inside, yeah even granma likes to fight. That principally why some people like to start an argument or others to start a fight, is literally a fighting instinct which nowadays isnt seen so good when used in physical ways (is bad to hit people and animals) so then how we hit something and still be ok, well with zombies :D. If there is a creature which only lives to hunt us then we MUST fight back.
Then we have the second reason that is the fear of a fearless enemy. We laught when we see a person in fear right? Yet everything that is creepy is fearless to our psychology, for example a BADDY ghost must surely be fearless to be bad. Well same example with zombies. Is a way of having a bag of meat in which we can shoot and hit and cut and stomp without having really a heavy remorse (except when they are close ones but that is more of a drama inclusion for people to buy the movie-more of a not so subconscious effect) yeat still having some fear for it driving adrenaline all our ourselves as they can kill you fast and easy. That dangerous situation yet easy to handle is what drives your brain to get aroused and excited about zombies. When in irl they will fall apart into pieces by sun and getting rot and stuff. Well this is really a long comment so if you read it all you have my congrats and i now own some of your soul D:

I have a wierd interest in zombie films and things like that because the idea of a zombie apocalypse completely freaks me out. There are just so many factors that go into what would make life hellish if zombies were walkin around everywhere. I like to see how different stories present those different plot points and seeing what challenges that kind of world would bring, but personally, I would hate to live in a world like that.

cheebifred April 10, 2014 - 4:01 AM

'what caused it all?' George A Romero!
sooo i think i may be a little too obsessed… I think i've watched just about every zombie movie going… even the not so much zombie type films like dog house… I even have the walking dead comics and a lot of zombie games…

I would have also have though the the hole 'zombie obsession' would have been more to do with the fear of the consequences of what we are doing to the world and each other – don't forget some of the best zombie movies (dawn of the dead springs to mind) came out not long after the cuban missile crisis not much was known about nuclear power and fear of the unknown usually leads to… well, zombie movies

sharphamer April 12, 2014 - 10:32 AM

Zombies are a business! Zombies make great enemies for shoot-em-up games and movies, since they don't need any motive to attack you, and they can't be dealt with in any way aside from running, or blowing its brains out. And since the stories can be as deep or brief as desired, can be considered magic, sci-fi, supernatural, whatever, it can appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

Media controls the masses, and entertainment media (including books and comics) is no exception.

The simple answer to why we are obsessed with zombies is that they are cool – cool because we are fascinated by the idea that we can be controlled by a virus or other parasites render us to become cannibalistic monsters.  And the other cool factor is that surviving the zombie apocalyptic condition would cause to be scared, yet thrilled, and empowered to know that we can survive such horror.

Mad Munchkit July 6, 2014 - 7:51 PM

Meh dunno zombie games are awesome doh :D :3 just grab le sniper and get on the empire state man :D

Kevin Beck July 7, 2014 - 11:28 AM

I'm very tired of zombies as well. I honestly believe that a part of the reason so many Americans are obsessed with zombies is that there are so many guns around us and many of us want to use them on humanoids without actually killing humans. Zombies would be a pretty convenient fantasy for that. Not only that, but many Americans who feel powerless in today's society would feel powerful in a 'might makes right' post apocalyptic society, so they hoard ammo and become "doomsday preppers" in the hope that the world will end so they can become powerful.

Give Dinosaurs some love! (or even better, some good games.) Wonder what will come after zombies….

BassRemedy August 1, 2014 - 4:13 PM

this theory is claimed *i think because humans are dominant on the earth no real  threat or enemy besides other humans and to me the zombie apocalypse is the embodiment of the fear of being the prey rather than predator; being outnumbered and helpless to do anything except run from the extreme numbers of zombies *this theory is claimed

Wendy Cubiad August 23, 2014 - 12:53 AM

I say there AWESOME!

Dowlphwin September 14, 2014 - 8:21 PM

My theory is that this is very different from the other example with vampires. As pointed out in this very video, we don't believe in zombies the way they used to believe in vampires, as real and actual causes for to them unexplainable phenomena. This is probably just another popular fad that randomly grew. Since the entertainment industry likes to cash in on popular things and is also very good at psychologically manipulative marketing, you just have to find one thing that's popular, maybe because it's a refreshing change, because it's something that was a little underrepresented in entertainment, and suddenly you have that glut of same-themed media.

Seriously, this is like someone writing a paper about the sociopsychological undercurrents of the dinosaur fandom a while ago. … When in fact, the whole phenomenon can be explained with what I just said combined with two words: "Jurassic Park".

Hexacious Jinx January 18, 2015 - 12:26 AM

I think it's survival..Just to have the thrill and excitement of danger..

personally I prefer vampires and sea monsters, but the realism of zombies makes me like them a bit. I think that part of the obsession is people like things that scare them and with the proof of infections that literally zombify insects partnering up with evolution we could be becoming zombies soon. which is a scary idea. that's my theory.

tim gersh August 1, 2015 - 11:34 PM

im tired of the walking dead, see its the same thing every week so this new show fear the walking dead seems good.  First in LA there are more bodies than Georga and that has an effect on zombies then well the majority of people see a a dirty body thats been ripped up walking to them at a steady pace not making a sound and they think help that body not zombie.  I just want something new but then its like 3 years in and im done

inferno0020 July 16, 2018 - 4:42 AM

I am very sick of zombie apocalypse genre, or the apocalyptic fiction genre overall. Their underlying messages are the same: "the world doesn't work the way I like so it should be destroyed." It is only the reaction when we lost both imagination and interest of the world around us-it is a twisted version of narcissism.

Michael Will August 4, 2020 - 1:06 AM

I am so sick and tired of zombies. Ugh! It was so overdone it’s turned into a hatred.
