Why Canadians should brace for bigger cell phone bills

by News Update

At the onset of the pandemic, Canada’s big three telecom companies waived roaming charges and overage fees. The move by Telus, Rogers and Bell reflected how reliant society had become on wireless devices due to COVID-19.

Now that the grace period has run out, Bell says it’s raising the price on some cell phone services. But that could impact your bill, even if you’re a customer of a different provider.

As Anne Gaviola explains, observers say Canada has entered a new era for prices.

This is a perfect example of what happens when government and corporations are working together. They create monopolies. Anti trust laws need to be enacted.

Liberals and Conservatives have never cared about Canadians, only big businesses where they get their donations from. They behave no different than the republicans south of us. They all talk a big game, but they never follow through. All of their bad habits and gaslighting has found it's way into other parts of the government, and now we see that the CMP's are also violating the laws. What ever happened to nobody being above the law? We need to stop electing liberals and conservatives into power, history has shown us that they will never change. The only way that change will take place is if we make it happen by voting these clowns out.

meantime Europe the cost plans goes down and down. Now you can have 50Gb with 10 Euro/mo. When I arrived in Canada I found out that people still text using SMS… which in Europe last time I did it was in 2010. What's going on Canada? To have a decent plan you don't find anything cheaper than 45/mo+tax. Someone has to explain it to me.

Bill K September 26, 2021 - 11:24 AM

Shut up liberal voters and media. This is what you voted for. I won't get a cell phone until i'm forced to.

Eric Rogers September 26, 2021 - 11:27 AM

Unless you are on call 24/7 you do not need a cellphone. WiFi works most of time in all countries around the world. All you need is wifi and any cellphone or iPod Touch. Lots of apps to call talk video other landlines and cellphones anywhere in the world for free. The only cost is wifi. You people are sucked into buying this like SUV’s and 4×4 vehicles.

Tony Gorilla September 26, 2021 - 11:31 AM

75 cents a minute?? That's theft. Do you realize that in Europe with 10 bucks a month you get unlimited phone calls and sms along with 5-7 GB for internet? In Canada, those thieves are pulling your pants down, spreading your cheeks and aiming for penetration. No vaseline.

Welcome to the Only In Canada Cell Phone Monopoly. Our prices are already out of this world because the big fish are allowed, encouraged even, to eat the little fish and therefore they can raise the price as they wish.

Little Miss Stamper September 26, 2021 - 12:52 PM

At this point in all honesty….it's just time to move. Between skyrocketing rent, Internet prices, cell phones. It's just not worth what it costs to live here anymore

Boss Bogan September 26, 2021 - 1:11 PM

Solution: CANCEL your mobile phones . Vote with your money. Walk away! If enough people do this, the Telcos will have no choice but to drop prices when demand sinks like a stone.

It is really strange to see the CRTC working and support monopoly. The CRTC should be on the side of consumers and that is what taxpayers pay CRTC salary, thinking about the CRTC behavior makes me believe that there is something is going on between them, as also they fight any competition that comes up from any company.

Only drug dealers and ER doctors need a cell phone. It was true in 1991, true in 2021. Slave boxes. Everywhere you go, people are glued to them. You're not that interesting, bro. You're not as important and vital to the Planet spinning as you think you are.
