Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Wednesday that he would not hesitate to have his soldiers shoot those who violate the country’s strict coronavirus lockdown measures.
“Shoot them dead.” Duterte’s orders to the military were televised after media reports of a disturbance in the capital Manila, where residents were protesting about government food aid.
On Thursday, however, the national police chief said police understood that Duterte was merely demonstrating the seriousness of the situation in his most recent address and that no one would be shot.
The city has been under lockdown since March 15.
