“We will do everything we can,” Michel Barnier, EU Chief Brexit Negotiator, said on Thursday, “but not at any price”.
Mr Barnier said he would continue these intensive talks with Britain to finally strike a deal “until the last possible day”.
David Frost, Mr Barnier’s British counterpart, tweeted: “Surprised EU is no longer committed to working “intensively” to reach a future partnership as agreed… Also surprised by suggestion that to get an agreement all future moves must come from UK. It’s an unusual approach to conducting a negotiation.”
Britain left the EU in January and the estranged allies have since been locked in complex negotiations to try to agree on a free trade deal for when a status-quo transition period ends on December 31.
