I don't think this is the best explanation of why the glasses sing at the particular pitch they do. Based on your explanation, we would expect a coffee mug to do the same thing.

It's the thin dry walls of the glass that vibrate. An easy analogy would be a kalimba. You have a stick of metal vibrating, and you can change its pitch by adjusting how far back you put a wood dowel which stops the vibration. Longer sticks have a lower pitch. A very thick stick wouldn't vibrate well.

The glass is the same but instead of a stick, it's a sleeve of glass; instead of a wood dowel, it's water; and instead of an overly thick stick, it's a mug that wouldn't vibrate well.

… Also, most glasses aren't crystal, and that has nothing to do with their ability to sing.

Is it sad that I knew from the first note what song it was?

Eduardo Hernandez October 21, 2015 - 12:43 AM

Hello, just a question, they mentioned how the sound hear when you hit, or rub the top of the glass is the natural frequency of the object at 00:20, however at 00:49 the say the note can be altered by adding or removing liquid inside. So is the natural frequency the sound produced when there is no liquid? Or am I wrong in assuming that the note has a direct correlation to the frequency of the wave produced?
