How First Impressions Work

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

So guys, we’re starting our second week here at DNews, and that made Anthony wonder about what goes into first impressions. What drives gut reactions and snap judgements? He came up with some interesting info. Check it out!

DNews is a show about the science of everyday life. We post new videos three times a day, every weekday.

Could this work in a positive way? lets say someone thinks a boy is cool because of what hat he wears. Lets then say you wore that similar hat one day, could the person then think your cool?

I disliked this video because he said "lame advice your mom gave you: just relax and be yourself." To be honest, that's probably the absolute best idea. Just relax and be yourself.

Yep, we do worry about what other people think of us. In evolutionary terms, being part of the group or alone meant life or death.

Is there anyone else who simply doesn't have an opinion of others? Except on what they explicitly say but even then it really doesn't from an opinion about that other person as whole, more just an idea that is separate from the person? My mind is completely blank when I'm meeting people and I have no idea what to talk about because they are all the same for me until I get to know what interests them. But that usually never happens because I don't know what to talk about in the first place, all the options have the same probability and therefore nothing at all comes to the mind.
Maybe it is also true that people make first impressions based on those who they have met before but if you haven't had friends then you really don't know what to think about a person. It is just human figure, a bag of meat, a computer with hidden files.
I don't also think that observing professors is a fair example because students are kind of experts in that. They listen to various professors 8 hours every day and of course will notice some patterns and types that emerge. Much better would be testing a first impression among the crowd you normally don't communicate with. Like party people for nerds and chess club for techno clubbers.
Also, the appearance of people is not the only thing that creates a first impression. Actors play very, very different characters all the time, so it is not about the looks. Funny that I have an opinion of people when watching a movie but not in real life. Mayube because in the movie you can see instantly inside the person, there is music, camera work, angles, scenery, people are shown in their private space.

This happened with me a while back, I moved away from my best friend, then I found someone who looked just like him. Then I became friends with him and he is the worst friend ever.

So that's why when I come across a girl who is nasty, I immediately label her as a bitch, and then I cannot let that go.

Our brain is storing tons of info all of the time huh?
Patterns rule our thoughts! I buy all of this!!
And – we make decesions based on these patterns
of knowledge!
That makes sense!
We need to 'jump away' from the snap judgements!
Thanks for your talk about this – I appreciate it!
Thanks!!!

Basically if is impression is kinda shy or awkard then that person will form bias toward you never get to know you on personal level and will create some conflicts also person rightly dishonest to themselves.
