Do We Have Left or Right Brain Personalities?

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

Is it true that some people are more ‘right brained’ or ‘left brained?’ Certainly some people are more creative and free-thinking, while others are more logic oriented. But is this really a result of one side of the brain being more dominant than the other?

An Evaluation of the Left-Brain vs. Right-Brain Hypothesis with Resting State Functional Connectivity Magnetic Resonance Imaging

“Lateralized brain regions subserve functions such as language and visuospatial processing. It has been conjectured that individuals may be left-brain dominant or right-brain dominant based on personality and cognitive style, but neuroimaging data has not provided clear evidence whether such phenotypic differences in the strength of left-dominant or right-dominant networks exist.”

Brain Mythology

“Some myths are based on a modicum of truth; others arise from misinterpretations or from a need for a great sound bite.”

The split brain: A tale of two halves

“Since the 1960s, researchers have been scrutinizing a handful of patients who underwent a radical kind of brain surgery. The cohort has been a boon to neuroscience — but soon it will be gone.”

One Brain…or Two?

“How many brains do you have – one or two? Actually, this is quite easy to answer…you have only one brain. However, the cerebral hemispheres are divided right down the middle into a right hemisphere and a left hemisphere.”

The Split Brain Experiments

“The split brain experiments revealed that the right and left hemisphere in the brain are good at different things.”

The Superhuman Mind

“Split-brain surgery, or corpus calloscotomy, is a drastic way of alleviating epileptic seizures, the occurrence of sporadic electrical storms in the brain.”

The Brain’s Left and Right Sides Seem to Work Together Better in Mathematically Gifted Middle-School Youth

“There really may be something different about the brains of math-heads. Mathematically gifted teens did better than average-ability teens and college students on tests that required the two halves of the brain to cooperate.”

Lateralization of brain function

“The longitudinal fissure separates the human brain into two distinct cerebral hemispheres, connected by the corpus callosum.”

The problem with some people is that their left brain has nothing right, while their right brain has nothing left.

I think to a certain degree this is idealistic. Practice, environment, and discipline can accomplish a lot but no matter how hard I try for decades I will never be able to have the intellict that Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking had. People are diverse and different and have inclinations towards certain things. I have minor ocd, anxiety, and tourettes. I know my brain has a very strong inclination towards structure, cleanliness, etc. This migjt be very difficult for a person who does not have ocd or anxiety. They can be taught and be disciplined to be clean but they will not reach the level and detail of cleanliness of people with severe ocd. Great video and message but lets not be completely idealistic.
