Do Rich People Cheat More?

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

Turns out money DOES change a person–and not for the better. Looking at the results of a new study, Laci explains just how awful people can be when they’ve got cash-filled pockets.

Read More:
Higher social class predicts increased unethical behavior

“Seven studies using experimental and naturalistic methods reveal that upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals.”

Social Class, Contextualism, and Empathic Accuracy

“Recent research suggests that lower-class individuals favor explanations of personal and political outcomes that are oriented to features of the external environment.”

Having Less, Giving More: The Influence of Social Class on Prosocial Behavior

“The degree to which those who enjoy abundant resources should act altruistically toward others is a contentious issue within moral frameworks and political philosophies.”

The Charitable-Giving Divide

“The problem is that the exceptional philanthropy of the superwealthy few doesn’t apply to the many more people defined as rich in the current debate over the Bush tax cuts — individuals earning over $200,000 and couples with revenues over $250,000.”

Why Those Who Feel They Have Less Give More

“What is it that wealth does to people? On Thursday’s Making Sen$e segment, Paul Solman traveled to the University of California, Berkeley, to examine the connection between wealth and happiness.”

Upper class people more likely to cheat: study

“The upper class has a higher propensity for unethical behavior, being more likely to believe — as did Gordon Gekko in the movie “Wall Street” — that “greed is good,” according to a new study from the University of California, Berkeley.”

Rich people less empathetic than the poor: study

“The depiction of the rich and cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” is backed up with scientific evidence, according to researchers at the University of California at Berkeley.”

What Price Will We Pay for Greed?

“‘Greed is good,’ Gordon Gekko trumpeted in the movie Wall Street. And don’t the past few years provide plenty of evidence for that assertion? But while popular stereotypes often depict poor people as the most likely to lie and steal, new research shows that it’s actually the wealthy who tend to behave unethically.”

Upper Class People More Likely to Behave Unethically

“A series of studies conducted by psychologists at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Toronto in Canada reveal something the well off may not want to hear. Individuals who are relatively high in social class are more likely to engage in a variety of unethical behaviors.”

So THAT's their mentality. No wonder they're such sore losers. And they won't even give me the pleasure of saying: "Well, you're still poor!", because that would put me in a disadvantage. No wonder all their strategies are predictable and dirty.

It all about class, not money, the lower orders whether rich or poor are many times more likely to cheat. Not that I give a f, people should just be honest, too many sneaky liars around.

This story makes no sense I have met several Billionaire's and none of them would ever do this, cheat etc. BTW DNews just because you have a fancy car doesn't mean your rich… It means you took out a loan… In fact poor people tend to want the Uber treatment more then the rich….For example the poor who are exempt from taxes in England more often then not take the private treatment in dentistry…. Chances are those poor people, in those less fancy cars are Middle Class.

Bill Gates Donates Millions a year to Charity(yes that's nothing for him, but the smaller your income the larger the value of one dollar would be so he would have to give away 100's of Millions to charity to equal that proportion), and so does many other rich people. I bet you these statistics don't include rich Arab's who will give away their prized possession if you ask for it.(I'm not joking I once said one such man had a nice house and it took me 30 minutes trying to convince him that I didn't want the house for free… or at all). In fact their religion states they must donate 15% of their wealth to charity. and no that's not to terrorism, they don't want people blowing themselves up so why would they finance it?

Yep, rich people are ethically broken. They have to come up with ways to rationally justify their wealth while watching others be impoverished… WELL OBVIOUSLY they are better people and entitled. Right? They break the law, cheat and call themselves jobs creates and all that crap. Oh, and they think that their money entitles them to make more off of the infrastructure? Which was built by who? Yeah, we the people, over generations… Did they invent the technology? Nope, certainly not most of them… That was done by scientists and technologists… Have one of these psychopaths imperil your business and your life just because he can… see what you think! Rich people suck. Not all of them, of course, just a lot of them!

ok, this is just dumb stereotyping. Being rich and having a little extra cash around does not equate to being a terrible person. I hate this assumption. My peers have always judged me for being that girl in the fancy clothes and living in a big house and just assumed that im a terrible person because of it. i am offended here

Being rich makes things easier that's it. Car breaks down send it to the dealer and get a loaner want to take a family vaca let's go las Vegas wife winds up in hospital debating if I should sacrafice a day of work and starve tonight or be with my loved one (oblivious choice) however it can't buy true friendship family and solve reality

I'd definitely like to hear more about the "percentage of their wealth to charity" bit… As a wealthier person is bound to have so much more money than a poor person, the same dollar value would always be a lower percent of the richer man's wealth.

It's pretty apparent to me that the reason "rich" people commit crimes, whether ethically or straight up stealing etc, is because they can afford the bail to get them out of jail and the lawyer to keep them out of jail. (And I'm speaking of a lawyer that gets paid by the criminal, not a court appointed lawyer)

As a son of a moderately rich family (If I had to guess networth of 10-12 million for family of four so not like retardedly rich, but rich enough to not have to worry about much) all I can say is NO SHIT. My dad (who is a self-made immigrant) is ridiculously smart, but also has mild sociopathic tendencies when it comes to people he isn't close with and routinely would feed false information to others so he could exploit and/or do unsavory things. I don't apologize or feel bad for it at all. Morals are abstract things, and generally most rich people I've met agree. Playing fair is for losers. You may call it unfair, but I call it life.

Wow, look at all the rich privileged people feeling oppressed. Never look at youtube comments.

Moist Wanderer September 8, 2014 - 5:33 AM

It is the moderately rich people who do that. The richest tend to be ok folks for some reason.

gbiagomba November 6, 2014 - 7:26 AM

I honestly think its culture and upbringing really. I know a lot of rich people who fit the description portrayed above but I also know a few who dont. You meet them and they are humble, give back and so on.

FortNikitaBullion December 13, 2014 - 11:55 PM

The rich got there by stealing and cheating in the first place.

JujuBu February 18, 2015 - 12:02 AM

I had been looking for the monopoly game study…but found this, and Lacy Green!  Not who I expected, but inequality, privilege etc…great fit.

Hi! Money and property will not go with you. Your deeds or work you do in life will decide your rebirth. Be honest and true with each other. Best for you

Mark 12:41-44 KJV
41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

Its an old phenomenon. Remember that man does not change. He will always be sinful throughout history, but Jesus has come to save us. He died for us and told his disciples to spread his Gospels. The life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Believe in Christ and be saved. Repent and turn to Jesus and his commandments of love! Amen

Kai Tsurugi April 19, 2019 - 8:24 PM

I believe that there are people of great wealth who are kind. I also believe it can be disadvantageous to to group people under one label. While most certainly there are individuals that do in fact perform dishonest actions within the very wealthy sphere, there are also individuals who also perform dishonest actions within the less wealthy sphere as well. The same thing applies when it comes to kindness and honesty.

Let us rid ourselves of such regressive undeveloped thinking and realize that the human spectrum exists in all walks of life. Let us march forward and strive to expand and grow our understanding as a replacement to blaming others, constant complaining and victimization. For its is that very poor mentality what holds us back in what we call "poverty".
