Cursive is Dead!

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

Just a few short years ago, cursive was something all kids were taught in schools. Not anymore! In many parts of the country, cursive is becoming a dead relic of the past. But Laci shows us why educators might be smart to keep teaching kids those loopy letters.

The role of sensorimotor learning in the perception of letter-like forms: tracking the causes of neural specialization for letters.

“Functional specialization in the brain is considered a hallmark of efficient processing. It is therefore not surprising that there are brain areas specialized for processing letters.”

Cursive giving way to other pursuits as educators debate its value

“Researchers into handwriting counter with evidence that penmanship is a foundational skill in student success, pointing to studies that show cursive writing stimulates areas of the brain unaffected by keyboarding and helps children develop skills in reading, spelling, composition, memory and critical thinking.”

The Great Handwriting Debate

“There has been a great deal of discussion around the topic of teaching cursive handwriting in the 21st century. Research on the debate is riddled with reasons both for and against including handwriting in the curriculum. ”

What Learning Cursive Does for Your Brain

“Ever try to read your physician’s prescriptions? Children increasingly print their writing because they don’t know cursive or theirs is unreadable.”

Cursive Benefits Go Beyond Writing

“Putting pen to paper stimulates the brain like nothing else, even in this age of e-mails, texts and tweets. In fact, learning to write in cursive is shown to improve brain development in the areas of thinking, language and working memory.”

Why You Learn More Effectively by Writing Than Typing

“The act of writing helps you clarify your thoughts, remember things better, and reach your goals more surely. Here’s a look at the science and psychology behind writing, and why the pen may be mightier than the keyboard.”

For Kids, Pen’s Mightier Than Keyboard

“Children with and without handwriting disabilities were able to write moreโ€”and more quicklyโ€”when using a pen rather than a keyboard to compose essays, according to new research.”

How Handwriting Trains the Brain

“Using advanced tools such as magnetic resonance imaging, researchers are finding that writing by hand is more than just a way to communicate.”

The Effects of Handwriting Experience on Functional Brain Development in Pre-Literate Children

“In an age of increasing technology, the possibility that typing on a keyboard will replace handwriting raises questions about the future usefulness of handwriting skills. Here we present evidence that brain activation during letter perception is in๏ฌ‚uenced in different, important ways by previous handwriting of letters versus previous typing or tracing of those same letters.”

To everyone saying cursive is easy, and not knowing cursive will make you dumb. Allow me to say that the way the words look has nothing to do with the beauty in a poem, or the importance in a document. As long as it is in words, and or gets the point across it is good. Besides for the most part handwriting as a whole is dying outside of school, due to computers.

Our granddaughter had never been taught cursive and her printing was terrible. So, about a year ago she taught herself cursive. And loved it. She was 15 at the time.

It's like in 1984, where they make the language easier and easier to make people dumb. I'm Italian and here everybody writes in cursive.

This girl is stupid. We can peacefully incorporate all three…cursive, printing AND TYPING….together. I prefer cursive but that typing course I had in 11th grade back in 1984 was one of the best classes I ever had. I mean, I hated it(lol) but it def helped in college when we were just starting to type reports/research papers on the library PC and def when phones started wth texting, and now of course, I'm a pro using my laptap/iPad.

I got put onto it when I was seven in the second grade.

At first I liked it. Later I hated it…

Iโ€™m back to loving it just because a actually CAN write with it

I think this 'Cursive is Dying' thing is only in a few places, here in the Philippines we are taught how to do cursive once we hit 2nd or 3rd grade and then use it for like- ever. If you don't write cursive in school the teachers won't accept your presentation.

No cursive= No grades

Jeff Tucker January 18, 2021 - 2:51 AM

cursive isn't that hard to learn, and practicing penmanship in general is never a bad thing, have you seen some of the penmanship from young adults?, ugg even printed it looks like a 1st grader

Cursive is about as useful as ball bearing stacking or underwater basket weaving. Sure it can be cool and artistic fun but ultimately a waste of time. They need to have a personal finance class before they bother with something frivolous like cursive. Most people don't know the difference between a roth ira and a normal ira. Or the fact that you pay about twice as much for a house if you take a loan for it because of interest. Broke af but you can wright cursive.

What are people gaining by not being taught handwriting skills? What's the advantage? how is it progressive? it's not.

Zohirul Islam Jewel June 6, 2021 - 10:20 PM

Just print, cursive is harder to read anyway. Not only that it's also very time consuming to learn.

I will only use cursive for signing my name and that is the only word I need to know

Terrence Gil Dionisio July 19, 2021 - 7:20 AM

Eversince 3rd grade, I stopped writing print, and started writing on script/cursive. It's faster. Downside of that is… My print writing sucks tho… Kinda looks like a 3rd grader wrote it. Lol. I'm 30 now btw.

Johnny July 25, 2021 - 4:17 AM

In my public school in europe we have to use cursive in school. There literally is no problem with that.

Zaden Zane August 17, 2021 - 2:38 PM

If the kids are going to learn typing instead of writing they could at least teach proper touch-typing. When I took a typing class in 1990 at age 18, there was an exact 50-50 male-female split in the class, which was unusual, because typing was seen as a women's job. Nearly all of us were learning for the same reason: we knew we'd all be using computers in the future, so why not learn proper typing, which is about 50% faster than 2-finger typing.
On what planet do people write faster in handwriting than on a keyboard? I can type 70 words a minute and that's while sipping tea, smoking, etc… (so I can do about 90 words a minute, easily, if I'm not doing these things). I can only write at about half that speed. Typing is way faster than writing and way more legible.

muhammad nahdy September 25, 2021 - 6:34 PM

Actually it's pretty subjective, cursive is not a necessity, and when we're talking about writing speed, tha type of writing that you prefer and enjoy will naturally be your fastest type of writing regardless it's cursive or not.
