Creating a $325,000 Synthetic Hamburger

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

It seems inevitable that as the Earth’s population rises, meat can’t always come from animals–one day it’ll have to be produced in other ways. Well that time has arrived. Researchers in the Netherlands have developed a way to make it happen. But the question remains, will anyone eat it?

First Vatburger is Ready to Eat

“After spending $250,000 worth of anonymously donated money, Mark Post from Maastricht University is ready to go public with his first vat-grown hamburger, which will be cooked and eaten at an event in London this week.”

Building a $325,000 Burger

“As a gastronomic delicacy, the five-ounce hamburger that Mark Post has painstakingly created here surely will not turn any heads. But Dr. Post is hoping that it will change some minds”

because we can get the nutrients from plants and the texture its just like a burger and what language is that

MrJason005 September 2, 2013 - 3:53 AM

That is Greek, and it means something.
Also, yes, you can get your nutritions from vegetables. I respect vegeterians who eat because they don't like meat, but I do not respect vegeterians who eat because they don't want to kill cows.

MrJason005 September 4, 2013 - 7:39 PM

Okay, your opinion. I'm not stopping you from being a vegeterian.

Jessica de Vries September 10, 2013 - 7:38 PM

Yeah, I know right?
Though.. I think it likely counts for human and not for animals but yeah.. it is inherted so much… I guess no one wants to miss out the taste of meat : P

CausticGoose September 11, 2013 - 8:24 AM

i do and your pic is creepy

JustPlaneNuts September 11, 2013 - 11:05 AM

I would eat it. Would solve so many problems.

Fizzyanims September 12, 2013 - 5:01 AM

Not veterinarian, but animals have a nerves system much like ours so every time you wen't to McDonald to grab a burger a cow or pig was killed and put through pain you couldn't imagine. Why would you have those animals killed when there are alternatives? Then there is a resource argument I could make but I'm running out of space.

Slitheen3 September 12, 2013 - 9:12 AM

We've been hunting animals for thousands of years, does the fact that we can make fake meat now make it wrong? I do think the way that most supermarkets and restaurants get their meat is messed up, though. Plus I think it just sounds gross. I don't think its wrong, it's a great solution for countries who are starving. I would eat it if I didn't have anything else to eat, but given a choice, I think I'll stick to real meat.

Fizzyanims September 13, 2013 - 10:10 AM

Its not 'fake' meat, its meat created with the same cells found in cow And, your chemicals argument is flawed too. There is probably twice as many chemicals in the meat you find in supermarkets than in the 'synthetic' hamburger. What exactly do you find gross about it?

Slitheen3 September 13, 2013 - 10:29 AM

Just the fact that it's grown in a lab by scientists. It's not real meat. You're not going to make me change my mind to stop eating meat

Fizzyanims September 14, 2013 - 9:05 AM

Never wanted to change you're mind. I still eat meat I would continue eating meat even after this technology became widespread; maybe I'll end up seeing this invirto-meat in store, I happen to try it and notice no difference from 'regular' meat. Why should I as a consumer not fell indifferent?

Slitheen3 September 14, 2013 - 9:15 AM

Yeah, I might try it. I try to get my brother and friends to try foods that sounds disgusting to them. I kind of took you as one of those people that attacks someone else because they have a different opinion. Sorry

I'm thinking of the hole in my wallet. If it cost 325000 for them to make it, I'm not gonna be able to buy it for 3 like I can now, more like 30!

Catcubus October 29, 2013 - 5:51 AM

Remember the magarine, who would have thought there would be trans fat that screw you up.

This time it's protein product….I could imagine a defect protein called prion. That's even worse. But nonetheless, I'll wait. Lab rats assemble!

Winman Video December 10, 2013 - 7:10 AM

If we make more lab meat, the lower the price, seriously, is it that hard to figure out?

Destiny Hamilton February 10, 2014 - 3:35 AM

I find this sick. I love animals. I love cows. However, I also love a good burger. Science is amazing but this is wrong. Science took a wrong turn with this one.

desscrit March 2, 2014 - 2:08 AM
