Covid: Was there a North-South divide in England?

The coronavirus pandemic has exposed many of the fault lines in our society, not least in the disproportionately high number of deaths of people from ethnic minorities.

Now this programme can reveal it may also have laid bare a north-south divide during the first wave of the virus.

Figures show that the proportion of deaths in the north of England were 14 per cent higher than the south between March and July.

In today’s other developments, there were 26,688 new Covid cases recorded in the last 24 hours and another 191 people have died, bringing the total number of deaths to 44,158.

We are all in the same storm but all in different types of ships.

It’s depressing how the government doesn’t recognise this.

Boris is finished. He will be gone within a few months I think.

And so logical. All based on sound and reasoned science, not! Most of us are already immune, as exposure has been the same as any cold virus. It only takes a virus a few weeks to go global anyway and if we didn't get them we would die. Which we will all do anyway. Most of the deaths have been people over 80!!!! With underlying conditions. How many viruses do we carry anyway?

SO LONG AS BUCKS, OXON, BERKS, SURREY AND SUSSEX ARE OPEN, THEN THE RULING CLASS DON'T CARE.

It has got damn all to do with a geographical divide. It's the turning of the screw, experimenting with the degrees of oppression around the country, until the increments are indiscernible, ending in the complete suppression of anything we recognise as normal.

I blame Arthur Scargill, not for coronavirus though.

The North will feel it more, ye because we have been abused by Parliament for years.

There always has been & always will be. The north of England would be much better off joining Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland & going for independence from incompetent clowns in Westminster.

I am a southerner who works with northerners, we are all very clear …culturally we are quite different and that’s okay

I'm going to be honest, I'm from Hertfordshire and find the North basically a foreign country. In particular, I find the idea of having pride in where one comes from – as is the case in the North – alien.
