Covid cases increase as tougher restrictions considered for North of England

Two weeks ago, Rishi Sunak the Chancellor said it was fundamentally wrong to hold people in jobs that only exist because of wage subsidies. (Subscribe:

Today, he announced a scheme to do just that. The reality of increasing lockdowns, especially in the North of England and a hospitality sector facing a bleak winter meant that urgent action was required.

The fact that this latest measure could last as long as six months indicates just how long the government believes the Covid winter might be with us.

It’s not just the economy, hospitals are also feeling the pressure as the number of Covid cases increase on a daily basis.

    # Take the party politics out of this. If the Govt can offer long term loans at very low rates via state-owned investment authorities, we would save on overheads and allow businesses to really have a go at riding this out.
    # Interest rates are low, but commercial banks are risk-averse when it comes to the 'real economy' – preferring instead to profit from moving e-money around.
    # It takes a lot more to restart closed down businesses, let alone re-establish them as viable ones. Then there is the staff – who will become unemployed and in need of tax-payer support.
    # Govt itself is bad at "job creation schemes" so would be much better off supporting sector by sector – from hospitality to precision engineering.

Lockdown didn't work. Most of the viral deaths happened after it began. C4 should be looking for real answers, we need our police, health services, schools, back and working for us.

Maybe Trump will get a body cavity search to see where his loose screw is? Or when it was and how much he paid her.

I don't believe this person. My information says hospital admissions usually fluctuate like this during the year, and from region to region. But it's her job to scare us, because if there is a pandemic later, she would have been held to blame if she hadn't. It's called being risk averse. In the future all professional risk taking will be banned.

Tory constituency areas avoid lockdown despite having higher coronavirus rates than places with restrictions

SEVERAL Tory constituency areas have managed to avoid lockdown despite having higher coronavirus rates than many places with restrictions.

The government is under growing pressure to explain why it has placed large parts of the north and Midlands under local lockdowns while other areas with similar infection rates have been overlooked.
In August, the government issued local lockdowns where an area's coronavirus infection rate exceeded 60 cases per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile several “red wall” seats that voted Tory at the last election have managed to avoid restrictions, including Barrow-in-Furness, where the infection rate is 112 cases per 100,000 population, Darlington where it is 110 per 100,000 and Wakefield where the infection rate is 73 per 100,000.

In fact, of all the areas where infections exceed 70 cases per 100,000 but lockdown has been avoided, the majority are represented by Tory MPs, The Times reports.
