The Quebec government has recorded four more COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total number of individuals who have died from the novel coronavirus disease to 22.
During a news conference on Saturday, Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Security Genevieve Guilbault announced an increase of 477 cases in the province which brings the total to 2,498.
Guilbault also announced the province would be setting up police checkpoints along major routes from the U.S. as well as in eight regions which have older, more vulnerable populations. The deputy premier said this was being done to ensure people are only travelling for essential reasons.
The increased death toll and new measures comes just a day after Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante declared a state of emergency for the city, which came at the request of Quebec’s public health department.
