China said on Wednesday it has lodged solemn representations with Canada on media reports that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had criticized China over its measures in Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
Zhao Lijian, the spokesman for the foreign ministry, said the Canadian government had shown hypocrisy and weakness.
When asked by a reporter Tuesday about Canada’s diplomatic ties with China, especially in light of the detaining of Canadians in China Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, Trudeau said “we will remain absolutely committed to working with our allies to ensure that China’s approach of coercive diplomacy” by detaining citizens is “not viewed as a successful tactic.”
Relations between Canada and China have become more tense after Canada had arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies, on a U.S. warrant and Beijing arrested Canadian citizens Kovrig and Spavor in late 2018 and later charged them with espionage.
