After more than a year of delays, violence and uncertainty – Somalia is ready to vote for its next president.
The original plan was to hold a one-person one-vote election for the first time in 50 years.
But security concerns, as well as legal and financial realities make that difficult.
Instead, Somalia’s parliament will pick the president.
So what does this election mean for a nation facing several challenges?
Presenter: Hashem Ahelbarra

Ali H. Warsame – Lecturer at East Africa University and a Former Minister of Education in the Puntland state of Somalia. He’s also a former Presidential candidate.

Garbage
Reading I
Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers and sisters
(there was a group of about one hundred and twenty persons
in the one place).
He said, “My brothers and sisters,
the Scripture had to be fulfilled
which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand
through the mouth of David, concerning Judas,
who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus.
Judas was numbered among us
and was allotted a share in this ministry.
For it is written in the Book of Psalms:
Let his encampment become desolate,
and may no one dwell in it.
and:
May another take his office.
Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men
who accompanied us the whole time
the Lord Jesus came and went among us,
beginning from the baptism of John
until the day on which he was taken up from us,
become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas,
who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.
Then they prayed,
“You, Lord, who know the hearts of all,
show which one of these two you have chosen
to take the place in this apostolic ministry
from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.”
Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias,
and he was counted with the Eleven Apostles.
Responsorial Psalm
113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
R. (8) The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Praise, you servants of the LORD,
praise the name of the LORD.
Blessed be the name of the LORD
both now and forever.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
From the rising to the setting of the sun
is the name of the LORD to be praised.
High above all nations is the LORD;
above the heavens is his glory.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high
and looks upon the heavens and the earth below?
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He raises up the lowly from the dust;
from the dunghill he lifts up the poor
To seat them with princes,
with the princes of his own people.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Alleluia
See Jn 15:16
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I chose you from the world,
to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel
Jn 15:9-17
Jesus said to his disciples:
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and remain in his love.
“I have told you this so that my joy might be in you
and your joy might be complete.
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another.”…
General Odawaa should take over until 1p1v is implemented
I am sorry that every term in somalia is too late for elections. But insha allah this year we pray to a president who is ready in terms of knowledge and leadership, somalia needs a president who will take the country from where it is now. Bring security, order, cohesive politics and give the country a free and fair election so that the people can elect their future government.
I want saying to david b this is a wrong place for you and your suggestion this country and it’s people have real spiritual thoughts and believe only lord on this earth so please stop lying to people
This is the only anchor on Inside Story I refuse to watch. He's got creepy eyes; he grunts when guests talk; his voice is creepy; he's rude. Put him behind the camera or fire him. I thumbs down any video he is on.

The biggest issue is Somalis are not fully united and the international world is not united in what it wants to achieve in Somalia. There are too many external actors meddling in Somali politics, from Somalia’s neighbours to outside Africa. Some of these external forces want democracy and some want Somalia to fail and break into mini clan countries. I’m praying for my nation as it’s surround from all sides by hyena around a dead carcass. I personally believe Mr Farmaajo is the best man for the job as he was tough on foreign interference and meddling. However, I hope Somalis will work with which ever president gets elected tomorrow to save our nation.
i am proud of the progress , some of you might as what is there to be proud of but go and look how somalia was in 2009
On the issue of security how does the international world expect Somalia to defeat Al Shabab when it’s enduring the longest arms embargo placed on any country in the world. Remember America with all its might and equipment couldn’t defeat the Taliban. Also in Iraq which was completely overran by ISIS had no army’s embargo placed on them. Somalis can solve their own issues but for this to happen countries need to stop meddling in Somali politics and lift the arms embargo so the army and Al Shabab are not using the same AK’s against each other.
Old dude is legit pro-elder not helpful at all
Viva hasan sheikh
Somalia needs to eliminate corruption, tribalism and terrorism in order to make progress!
The new president is going to be elect tomorrow, I think the main challenges is going to be face is security crisis and political instability in somalia because of somalia government is tackling with the security and political issues more than two decades, and I hope these challenges will continue until the people of somalia stop asking for help with the international community to bring peace and stability in somalia I know international community isn't serious about somalia problems to bring solution going forward.
