Border force intercepts almost 700 migrants crossing the channel in record day

A record number of Channel migrants for this year reached the UK on August 2 as people smugglers took advantage of still conditions and good summer weather.

A total of 696 migrants were intercepted by Border Force attempting to cross the 21-mile Dover straits, crammed into 41 boats – an average of nearly 50 per vessel.

The latest arrivals bring the total for the year to 17,008 – a figure which was not reached until September in 2021 – and it surpasses the previous high for the year of 651 in a day in April.
