BC senior takes out ad in desperate quest to find a doctor for her husband

by News Update

UPDATE: Janet Mort confirmed to Global News Tuesday that a doctor has come forward and agreed to take her husband on as a patient.

Readers of a widely circulated Vancouver Island newspaper opened their broadsheets July 30, 2022, to find a shocking sign of just how bad British Columbia’s family doctor crisis has become.

Printed on page A2 of the Victoria Times Colonist was an unusual newspaper ad: a plea for help from a Greater Victoria senior.

“We need a doctor’s help to renew my 82-year-old husband’s prescriptions. We will agree to any reasonable fee,” the ad reads.

“Our wonderful family doctor retired at Christmas. No walk-in clinics seem to be available. Today even Telus Health MyCare had no Dr. virtual appointments available for months,” it continues.

The ad was posted by Janet Mort, an Order of British Columbia recipient who has a PhD in language and literacy and who has been lauded for work helping children overcome reading problems.

Mort’s husband of 51 years Michael is dealing with a variety of medical conditions, including recovery from recent brain surgery.

When their doctor retired more than six months ago, he renewed Michael’s prescriptions and recommended a few options including Telus’ telemedicine platform. Kylie Stanton reports.

Things Jesus said:

"The world hates me because I testify about it that it's works are evil"

"Don't be surprised when the world hates you, it hated me first"

"If any man looks at a woman with lust he has already committed adultery in his heart with her."

"Unless you eat my body and drink my blood you have no life in you"

"Those that believe the Son have eternal life, those that do not obey the Son will not see life but the wrath of God abides on them"

"Unless you believe in me you will die in your sins"

"Unless you repent you will likewise perish"

A shortage of nurses and doctors but a massive surplus of police. Just how should our system be defined and when will our "leaders" recalibrate priorities more in line with citizens interests?

Vancouver Coastal Health slandered my name and put false information in my file, preventing me from getting my heart medication, let alone any sort of medical assistance including being kicked out of emergency rooms without even an examination when I was having a stroke, pre-pandemic. So I am so glad your station will help the rich, but what about the rest of us?

I am a pharmacist on the Island. Everyday I encounter patients who have run out of refills or prescriptions go invalid due to the doctor retiring. We try our best to provide services within our scope to help, but I have patients asking for courses of antibiotics and other situations where an emergency fill or renewal is not appropriate nor permissible as per current regulations. It is rough and scary. I keep my fingers cross that I won't need a doctor anytime soon.

This is so sad, but it’s not just BC so many have struggles trying to find a family doctor everywhere. And it’s not just “finding any doctor” ppl need to feel comfy about the doctors they choose. I know so many ppl who are unhappy with their doctors as they don’t take the time with them and rush appointments because they over book their days trying to fit as many patients in. I had an amazing doctor for the last 30 years but she decided to give up the practice last year and work doing surgeries at the hospital instead. I am still heart broken over loosing such a great doctor and luckily she had someone else take over her spot in the practice so all her patients got transferred to the new one. I have yet to meet this new doctor but I’m hoping and praying she’s just as good as they are so hard to find. I pray this couple and anyone else in need of a family doc. Finds one, a good one!!!
