Amina Mohammed: 'A woman as president of Nigeria would be great' | Talk to Al Jazeera

by News Update

Amina Mohammed has risen from humble beginnings in Nigeria to become the most powerful woman in the United Nations. For more than 30 years, she has worked hard to shine a light on the developmental challenges facing our world – particularly women.

At a time when there are concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic could wipe out the progress made towards gender equality in multiple areas, what can be done to build back a fair world for women after the injustices of the pandemic? And would she like to become Nigeria’s first female president?

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed talks to Al Jazeera.

A woman does not need to dress like a letter box to be modest. There is something grotesque about a person going around in a shroud on a beautiful warm day with a sunny sky. If she wants to dress like that, nobody should say she can`t but to me it just seems wrong. Here in Ireland the sky is usually grey and overcast and temperatures are cool. When the sun comes out, it is so nice to go out in a t-shirt and shorts. I am fairly religious myself but I have learned that it is foolish to try impose my beliefs on others because they will rebell and reject all that is sacred. I think it is better to live your beliefs by example.

All we need to do to fix the planet and live in a sustainable world is give up mass manufacturing technology to create jobs for all. The only thing that stops us is the greed of the owners of mass manufacturing machinery and their unwillingness to sacrifice for the sake of humanity and to lessen the suffering of billions of people. When the wheat threshing machine was invented farm labourers were forced to smash up the machinery because they knew they would die in poverty from the selfishness of the machine owner who did not care if hundreds lost their jobs and starved to death.
