5G Service Launches Amid Flight-Safety Uncertainty | WSJ

by News Update

Airlines canceled some flights before a new 5G wireless service rolled out, even after Verizon and AT&T agreed to limit the signal around U.S. airports. The FAA says the service could affect airplane safety systems, a claim the wireless industry refutes. Photo: Justin Lane/Shutterstock

FAA , FCC or NTIA , let the finger pointing begin . Either someone never asked the question or someone failed to speak up .

Choonghoon Hyun January 20, 2022 - 6:12 AM

Wall Street didn't go deep inside to find out why this occurred. Everyone in the loop should have known the potential 5G network frequency spectrum conflict with the radar altimeter.

seccat January 20, 2022 - 6:47 AM

Fix your airplanes if your so concerned about interference.

Chris Williamson January 20, 2022 - 6:56 AM

Why is this even still a thing? Seems like something quickly objectively determinable. On a day with nice weather, take a test plane up, and as it's landing turn on the 5G. Either it interferes or it doesn't. This is the same FAA and these are the same airlines that have told us we can crash planes by keeping our cell phones on — a problem never actually observed.

RustyShackleford42 January 20, 2022 - 7:34 AM

The thing about 5g is that I don't know anyone that wants it. Mobile speeds are good enough and most people just want more total data usage a month. I've never seen an entire industry bring a product or service to market which has no demand.

Bohao Zhao January 20, 2022 - 7:35 AM

The 5G signal interference is probably exaggerated, but the real threat to aviation safety is pilots believing the theory and not trusting their instruments during the time of emergency.

Luke Hancock January 20, 2022 - 8:00 AM

Basically the FAA and the FCC don’t trust each other

Frank Hellman January 20, 2022 - 8:21 AM

🖤 The airlines are welcome to route their flights at tree level over my house. My LTE RSRP is consistency below -125. No 5G problems here! No 5G.

Drumlin Jay January 20, 2022 - 8:22 AM

Oh in dec mayor pete was on maternity leave 🙄

Ken January 20, 2022 - 8:25 AM

Basically US 5G is garbage since other countries are not having issues.

Barbara Tyrrell January 20, 2022 - 9:12 AM

Hope the phone companies start pushing back hope the turn it on 👍😊

Y’all are STILL clueless about the damage to human body cells? Y’all are SCARY‼️

Why USA 5g technology have this problem?

Art Vandelay January 20, 2022 - 9:37 AM

At least they didn't wait until the last minute to raise these concerns.

Tippy January 20, 2022 - 9:42 AM

Hasn't 5G been released for a while now? I see my phone on 5G all the time in my area.

in china , 5g is everywhere, include airport !

CC January 20, 2022 - 10:16 AM

It's not that 5G disrupts aircraft instruments, it disrupts the Communications…..

Unboxing john January 20, 2022 - 10:29 AM

I haven't heard one scientific report, they haven't investigated the effects so why do you want to change something without investing it.

Sissy Carolina January 20, 2022 - 10:47 AM

I think the Lear jet crash in El Cajon/San Diego area was a result of 5G interfering with their altimeter. It is the only logical explanation. There is 5G all over and under their flight path in El Cajon. I know because I live here. The weather was bad and when the pilot switched from instrument to manual control didn't realize that he was at a lower altitude then he was because his altimeter was giving him the wrong reading. Mind you this is a small airport he was landing at but what difference does it make if it is a large airport or a small airport if a pilot still has to rely on his altimeter and it is being interfered with by 5G.

Segredos do Tio Sam January 20, 2022 - 10:47 AM

oh man. That is why my flight was having electronic problems. It was my Bill Gates 5G chip that I got with my 2nd dose of Moderna interfering with the Radio Altimeter. Sorry Jetblue.,

Mosin Destolo January 20, 2022 - 11:01 AM

It's looks like just to happen only in US. by political game. Here in Finland we have 5G towers everywhere, including airports with no any problem. You can also go to check with another countries too if they have any problem with 5G…😁

The world needs to wait until several planes crash and then the right decision will be taken. The is how the world works.

Mr3picly January 20, 2022 - 12:23 PM

Junaidi Salam January 20, 2022 - 1:37 PM

answer: when US starts using 5G technology, then the US starts paying HUAWEI for their 5G patents…

you can definitely feel how shameful the U S would be…

Billy Ponsonby January 20, 2022 - 1:38 PM

Easy. Just put the aircraft into airplane mode.

boeing also said that 737 MAX was a safe aircraft, this won't be resolved until people die from capitalistic interest.

Hello World January 20, 2022 - 3:38 PM

FAA is full of corruption, other countries in the world are already using it, I smell bullS here, look at how Boeing cut conners and risk passenger safety…

nirvana9 January 20, 2022 - 5:23 PM

5G also has a really bad effect on humans animals and birds

Mark Bratcher January 20, 2022 - 6:17 PM

I think I heard the word "testing" mentioned once almost at the end of the video. Rather than various experts arguing over their opinions, there should be lots of testing.

Dunirah Khan January 20, 2022 - 7:11 PM

5G affects on heart. how you can ask scientists if they willing to tell you. Why they not recomend mobile rather then iPhone. Why the recomend you to use mobile far from your body? Like microwave harm you every wave harm you. Dont play with humans health.

Andrzej Sati January 20, 2022 - 8:08 PM

When you ask about safety of 5G for human health you are being attacked with invectives why should it be different this time ?

cris Craft January 20, 2022 - 9:14 PM

I think it’s just because airlines want people to buy their internet option onboard and their scared that one day you could have connection to internet even at 39.000ft without having to connect to their internet.
