3 Cool Materials That Mimic Shark Skin

by Moin Uddin Ahmed Tipu

Sharks are built to be the perfect killers, swimmers, and survivors. And we lowly humans are finally realizing the genius of their design. And their skin is particularly amazing. Anthony shows us why it’s one of nature’s engineering marvels.

Biomimicking Sharks

“Sharks may conjure up notions of great and fearsome predators, but one day, people may think of sharks equally as great teachers.”

Dermal Denticle

“Dermal denticles (placoid scales) are tough “scales” that cover the skin of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays).”

Biomimicry Shark Denticles

“Great White Sharks are stealthy hunters and the secret is in their skin. Shark skin is covered by tiny flat V-shaped scales, called dermal denticals, that are more like teeth than fish scales.”

A Material Based on Sharkskin Stops Bacterial Breakouts

“Similar to the texture of sharkskin, Sharklet’s three-micrometer-wide diamond-shaped pattern prevents bacteria from taking root.”

Sharklet Technologies

Like a shark in the water

“Innovative lacquer system to reduce drag.”

Because I use Noughty Kelvin as my nickname. Noughty = Nought + naughty(horns). So my name is Absolute zero at the same time as it is Naughty Kelvin. It's brilliant.

0:18 AEROdynamic coating?? you mean HYDROdynamic coating. I would leave this planet iff sharks could fly

I rather have 3,000 teeth though…

I don't think that SHARKNADO is a documentary.

Their skin isn't AERODYNAMIC it's HYDRODYNAMIC

they're almost the same thing and are basically interchangeable

i believe a side effect of having that reflective coating is that it makes the image more blurry, i think the way to go would be to make the rod cells in the human eye see a bigger spectrum of electromagnetic waves like infrared or ultraviolet.

In seven whole years, it seems to have escaped everyone's notice that this "engineering marvel" that's a "genius of design" (see the video's written intro) has indeed so obviously been designed, and can't possibly have been designed so marvelously by an unrelated series of mere accidents.
Maybe it's time for you all to notice, there actually is a Creator of all these amazing wonders of the naturall world.

Seeker, "Sharks are built to be the perfect killers, swimmers, and survivors. And we lowly humans are finally realizing the genius of their design."

…. Lol … It was designed! It took over 6000 years for mankind to achieve the technology just to start designing materials to mimic shark skin.

Leila Pereira October 14, 2020 - 1:12 PM

Sharkskin is "hydrodynamic", since sharks live in water. The incorrect use of "aerodynamic" implies that sharks are out in the air, which is false. A bit of a shocking mistake for Discovery.
